Like red wine, certain things can get better with age. Don’t think that if you’re in the over-50 crowd, you have to settle for a less-than-fulfilling sex life.

You can still enjoy sex, you just may have to put a little more planning into it than you did when you were younger.  Recent studies show that people maintain active sex lives well into their later years. According to one recent survey, more than half of men and almost a third of women over the age of 70 reported they were still sexually active.

Here are 10 things you Should Know About Sex After 50:

It’s never too late to bring fun to your life and try new experiences. Whatever your definition of fun may be, avoid falling into a rut to ensure a good time in your relationship. Embrace the opportunity to do something that pushes you out of your comfort zone as a pleasurable experience and you’ll find your relationship immediately more fun. Never take your partner for granted. The couples having the most fun out there know this is all a gift, and we have more fun when we take the time to appreciate the things we love about each other.

Sex between older women and younger men is no longer taboo. Women are definitely feeling more empowered now and often more mature can also be better lovers. Think of Samantha on Sex and the City and how she knows she is the hottest lady of any age.

On the other hand, olden men are, often, better lovers than younger men. With age comes experience and with experience comes perfected techniques, and the knowledge of how to have a good time. Would you rather have a doctor who just graduated from medical school or the one who has performed your surgery hundreds of times?

If a couple is having less sex, it’s not her fault.  If a woman over 50 is having less sex, chances are it’s him, not her. In men, low sex drive is often related to health problems or medications he may be on, many of which are known to create some sexual functioning challenges. Men aren’t used to needing stimulation, and it can be troubling. Sometimes he’ll just avoid it, causing the woman to think he’s no longer attracted to her — which results in a sexual Catch-22.

Sexual Peaks are different for men and women. While men typically reach their sexual peak in their teens and young 20s, women don’t usually reach it until their 30s and 40s. On top of that, many older women have figured out how to reduce their stress and after years of caregiving, have learned to take care of themselves. One of those ways could be sex.

Grownups can also play with sex toys. Many Women over 50 often experience more trouble having an orgasm than they did when they were younger.  This result on more time is required to climax. Women and their partners can overcome these changes by getting creative. A survey conducted by the authors of The Normal Bar (I’m one!) this year found that more than 50 percent of respondents over the age of 50 use sex toys individually or as a couple.

Online dating isn’t just for the young
For those of us looking to start dating again over the age of 50, it can be a daunting prospect. Divorces, separations and the loss of loved ones can leave us feeling unsure of how to proceed and questioning whether we should at all. But it’s never too late to find love, companionship, and happiness, no matter what your age is!

Plenty of newly single fish in the sea. Only about 62% of women aged 45 to 54 are currently married, according to the US Census Bureau. About 3% are widowed, 19% are divorced, and almost 4% are separated. But with the upsurge of online dating, it’s not likely you’ll be alone for long. And with your new single gal status comes a sense of sexual freedom.

Married or single, physical attraction is just as important for those over 50 as it was at 20. Staying active and taking care of your appearance is important at any age.

Once the sex goes, so many other problems can follow.  According to several surveys, sexless marriages were more likely to have considered divorce than those in sexually active marriages.
