WHAT WE REALLY THINK ABOUT AFTER FIFTY WORK ISSUES

What We REALLY Think About After Fifty Work IssuesWe introduced the AFL Your Work Polls in mid-September, 2010.  Since then, you've participated in 6 Your Work Polls.  We thought you'd like to know the results - so here they are!  We start by presenting the most recently completed Poll, ending on December 31, 2010.  Remember, this is what YOU and other After Fiftiers have to say about After Fifty work-related issues!

What We REALLY Think About After Fifty Work IssuesIn the Poll running from December 1-31, 2010, we asked you, "What's the most important characteristic in a CEO/boss?"  The majority of us After Fiftiers (53%) believe that the boss/CEO needs to be inspirational and visionary, first and foremost.  Does experience matter?  Yes - 23% (almost 1 in 4) say that's most important.  Other characteristics, like intelligence (6%), practicality (16%) and political savvy (2%) are much less important, as far as we're concerned!

What We REALLY Think About After Fifty Work IssuesIn the Poll running from November 16-30, 2010, we asked: If job candidates were identically qualified, which would you hire?  For 7 out of 10 of us, we'd pick someone we went to school with, or our friend. If you're related to the boss, that doesn't guarantee you much.  Only 6% would choose that candidate - and only 9% of us would choose our own relatives.

What We REALLY Think About After Fifty Work IssuesIn the Poll running from November 1-15, 2010, we asked you why you think employers may be reluctant to hire 50+ candidates.  This is why After Fiftiers believe employers are reluctant: 27% say that employers think our tech skills are outdated and ANOTHER 27% say employers think we want too much money.  Twenty-four percent say that employers are reluctant to hire us because of our health issues.

What We REALLY Think About After Fifty Work IssuesIn the Poll running from October 16-31, 2010, we ask: Have you ever been a victim of age discrimination.  Almost 3 out of 5 of us (58%) say NO.  That means that 42% of us HAVE suffered discrimination based on age.  But we suffer in silence.  Only 1% of us have officially complained and/or filed a suit.

What We REALLY Think About After Fifty Work IssuesIn the Poll running from October 1-15, 2010, we ask: Which employment sector would you prefer to work in?  A full 33% say it doesn't matter, just as long as we can work!  Only 11% prefer to work in the private sector, and 7% prefer not to work at all at this time.  The balance, 48% prefer self employment (24%) or working for the government, public sector or a non-profit (24%).

What We REALLY Think About After Fifty Work IssuesIn the Poll running September 16-30, 2010, we ask: Would you be okay working for someone younger than yourself?  The answers are interesting.  More than half (51%) said "yes" - that working for someone younger would be okay.  And 45% say it just doesn't matter.  Working for a younger person is only an issue for 4% of us at this time.
