Weight Loss
I really need to take off a good 20 to 30 pounds. I have yo-yo'd for years in my weight 10-20 pounds, now it is getting out of control. Has anyone used Alli, Nutrisystem, or Weight Watchers to get started on the right track with any luck?

BridgetMcM From my very understandably excited friend Patrice: "Since I started my "Get healthy, get fit" mission on January 8th, I have lost a total of 30 lbs, 11 inches off my waist, 9 inches off my hips, and 5 inches off my thighs!!!! I sleep like a baby again; I have the energy I had in High School; my skin has improved, my mood is elevated (no mood swings); my brain is working better (yeah I said it...I think more clearly)...THIS IS TRULY AMAZING IN EVERY WAY!!!" Disclaimer: Fat release expected, 30 lbs, not typical.

Saintpat I swore to report my plus and minus. Have to do it. It's a vow! Lots of salad, not much exercise as I had a back flareup. Breakfast exemplary. Still dipping too much into wine/liquor some nights -- I guess the stressed nights. That's a long time habit; not a good one. It works to fix up all my food for the day in the morning -- any cooking, my salad, measure out all my water (doctor says a gallon a day), prep vegetables, pour my milk into glasses, etc. I'm not doing my 90 min exercise, but am doing only 30. Good positives are this morning at breakfast I had one pancake and a fruit serving. I didn't even finish my pancake.

Jo-Anne SaintPat: Don't beat yourself up. No, you're not doing 90 min of exercise - but you ARE doing 30!!! That's great! That's 30 more than most! Keep up your good work!

Saintpat Reporting some positives: gave all the bags of holiday party food to a neighbor to take to the teachers' lounge at her high school; threw to the birds the cc.cookies my son forgot to take; bought several l/2 cup and l/4 cup measuring cups and put them on the countertop; bought a scale to weigh 2 ounces of meat. Bought lovely greens for salads. I measured my nut snacks with the 1/4 cup. Ate a half sandwich instead of a whole one. Stayed out of restaurants! Failures included some fatty sausage and cheese and red wine, and about 5 caramels from the holiday feasts; but all that is gone now and I won't buy more.

Saintpat the question is about the formula/food commercial programs. I and friends have tried them all between us. I didn't like them; and my friends got tired of them and gave up. It seems to me that you have to choose your food, prep your food, control portions, and do it for yourself. If someone else is doing your food and choices for you, you are not really doing the things to eat and manage food like an adult; it kind of makes you a child whose meals are set by Mom. Rebellion is going to follow.

Saintpat I'm going to blog my progress here, because "reporting truthfully" is one of the items in my health plan for 2012. I have really gotten fat post-50. I was once so thin my bones showed under my skin! I've got to do this now; I have no more excuses. I live alone, have no job, have complete control of time and effort, and am healthy enough to exercise. I've been off track with several years of injuries and stress from caregiving, but those are over now. Wish me luck; the same to you. We won't regret what we do for our health. I deeply regret getting a hundred extra pounds on my 5foot2inch frame. I deeply regret all that failure to really try. I'm doing it, and my reward will be a cruise to the South Pacific.

BamaSarg I started 2011 feeling bad - acid ,reflux, continual heartburn (so it seemed), no energy, 281 pounds at 57. Then top it off I had a medical check up and well Type 2 Diabetes. I said that was it, I got up and got moving and started using "Better Body Products by Yoli". I walked a average of 4 miles a day week days and 12 on week ends. Taking Alkalete to control my PH level. I lost 41 pounds, over come the reflux and greatest of all at my annual physical I celebreated by 58th birthday with perfect blood sugar readings. My next move will be to loose an additional 25 pounds before Thanksgiving. with the help of "Yoli's" new life style change products. Folks I am not advertising for "Yoli" - I am only speaking of my experience.

bodyandsoulhealth As a personal trainer, YMCA fitness instr and previous women's gym owner, I have worked with countless women in weight management. It is a tiered process. I have created common health plans (regular food) and have utilized other nutritional programs. It is so individualistic, "one size does not fit all." Excercise is a key component, but it really is body, mind, emotions & spirit. Those all work together. I am just beginning a new private class next week and all of the women have these issues. Let me know if I can help...

Laura1001 Kathie50, I too am having a hard time losing at this time of my life. I found what helped me the most was joining OA. Over eaters Anonymous. They have a great program and encouraging meetings. plus it doesn't cost alot like WW. Just a donation at every meeting. But I also found out that no matter how i change my eating, I won't lose unless i move more. Exercise is the key. Good Luck.

dpatke Help, I need to loose 150 lbs. I purchased Alli but have been afraid to use it. WW makes me crazy, all the counting and measuring, I can't do it. South Beach worked great, I lost 10 lbs the first week and than gained 4 back? I'm confused as to what to do. I don't eat processed or prepared food. Someone said that soy is bad? I'm in menopause, I stopped smoking 6 years ago. Eating in the evenings is a real problem. I fix a good dinner and then I can't stop! I have ongoing foot, leg and knees issues making walking hard to do. I know these problems have a lot to do with my weight, but it is a catch 22.

suzyq75762 It is sooooooo hard to lose weight these days. Yes, the weight keeps packing on and I know I need to go back to WW & exercise more but with 2 jobs,5 grandkids & now my horse farm who has time for either? Not to mention anti-depression drugs& other medications seem to slow my metabolism way down. It is very upsetting at times.

NancyS I've lost, and continue to lose, 50 lbs without joining programs or receiving meal plans. Simply, portion control, purchase produce, meat and fruit locally (nothing in grocery stores), dairy is local, as well as eggs. I do not eat "prepared" foods or do so very minimally. I read everything and avoid: preservatives, pesticides (food is supposed to go bad and not last more than a week or two), artificial ingredients, soy (major downfall for women), etc. My medical ailments have all but disappeared and only re-appear when something has slipped by me.

dagokid Just fractured my left ankle (2 most important bones too F/T) and sprained my right foot! I knew that I would not be walking for a while since I had to use a wheelchair, then a walker and about 5 casts. So, I decided to do a bit of reducing on the intake of food (hate the word diet) and guess what? That was April 1 and as of today May 23 I am glad to say without exercise I have lost 10 pounds :) Wow, do I feel great and all my summer clothes FIT ME :) YES~~ I did not cut back except for eating 1/2 of my dinner and I did not snack and it worked great!!!!!

masarj4 I'm a supporter of WW! Though I'm aware of the great results through the South Beach Diet, as well. Finding a diet (or healthy way of eating) really needs to kick in for you. I love my carbs, so WW is the best bet for me.

Socratic1 I use products by ViSalus Sciences, and the best part is they are free. You simply get three friends to join you in a 90-day challenge and use the same products you use. Most lose between 5 and 10 lbs the first week! If you want to learn more, just message me.

HeatherGail Kathie50, I've used Weight Watcher the last year or so...I needed to lose 30#'s in hopes to get my chlorestoral down and, well, get back into my clothing! Alli wasn't an option as I'd read that was recommended for those who needed to drop a minimum of 50#'s. Weight Watchers worked for me...I started December 4th of 2009 at my first meeting followed the program and by July 2010 I was down 26#'s. And I got through the winter holidays without any problems! It's an easy program to follow, and very supportive environment. You don't have to buy any special WW's packaged foods if you don't want. The glory of WW is they use real foods you buy and use every day as the basis; it's real life! I'm one of those that needs that "IN YOUR FACE" accountability, so the meetings were essential for my success. As an extra bonus for me was my health insurance plan covered part of the cost...so double check with yours maybe you have that benefit as well. Good luck to you. Success is just around the corner!

dbasilio You don't have to go to meetings -- and yet you can still be successful with WW. I did it once before, losing 25 pounds in 2-1/2 months by following their point system. The focus for me was the food; I did not focus on the exercising and still was successful. I signed-up for the on-line program at that time and found the on-line tools for determining points for recipes I put together very helpful.

AnnML I tried several diets over the years too. Alli also worked for me, I think it was a combination thing. I really did watch what I was eating and tried to eat a lower fat meal. I did notice that I was one of the people that had lots of gas issues if I was not careful and watch what I was doing. To make it easier I used Lean Cuisine dinners for one of the meals many days, that way I knew for sure the calories and fat. The combo really helped me get over the hump, and finally take off the weight.

Joyce, 35 pounds is great, congratulations! I was looking at the material on line about Alli. It looks interesting but to be honest I am a little concerned about the side effects that can happen with the gas and bowel issues. It looks like some of that can be controlled by not taking the product when you know you are eating a really fatty meal, and by really watching the fat content overall that you eat. Were you able to deal with these issues and did you use it with every meal?

Sailinggirl49 I have been using Weight Watchers off and on for a few years. I have found it is an easy program to use since you can choose to eat the frozen dinners and snacks if that is easier or use the point system to keep track of what you are doing and eat anything. I find when the scale starts to slide back up that if I follow the plan again and I can get things back to the place they need to be. I have to admit, as I am getting older, it does take a little longer than it used to, if only I could say that about putting it on!

xlorah Like Jo-Anne, I quit smoking and packed on the lbs. I am still struggling to take off weight. I have tried Atkins, but it was not a good long term. I have quit drinking soda except on very rare occasion and that took off 10 lbs. I am working on walking 3 times a week and want to start eating more healthy. it seems like no matter what we choose to do, it's a struggle until you find the right thing for yourself, even if it's a combination of things.

Jo-Anne Hi Kathie50: I gave up cigarettes around the same time that I started into menopause. Bottom line, the weight just packed on. What finally worked for me was the South Beach Diet. South Beach is essentially a low carb diet. I still have an extra 10 lbs that I'd like off...someday, hopefully....
