RESOURCES FOR SENIOR CITIZENS

Is there a senior citizen in your life?  How do you protect and prepare yourself and the senior citizens in your life when it comes to healthcare, housing, money, even end-of-life issues?  The Federal Government provides a helpful website devoted to answering senior citizen issues.  (See the link, below.) Here’s a summary of what you’ll find there.

  • Help for Caregivers.

Long-distance senior citizen care-giving topics are thoroughly covered.  There’s a section devoted to managing daily affairs; developing a care plan; and organizing documents and paperwork.  If the senior citizen is your spouse, you’ll find a link to the Well Spouse Association’s support for spousal caregivers, along with a link to all of Medicare’s resources.

  • Health and the Senior Citizen.

Here you’ll find a gateway into the main Medicare and Medicaid websites to see if you qualify for certain types of financial help.  There is also a comparison of the various Medicare plans.

  • Housing.

Are you curious about reverse mortgages? Learn all about them here.  And the Eldercare Locator lets you search by zip code for home and community-based services, such as transportation, meals, homecare and caregiver support.

  • End-of-Life Issues.

Here you’ll find a hospice locator, a Factsheet entitled “Coping with Bereavement” and an 800 phone number to call in times of crisis.  And there’s a section on wills, estate taxes, living wills and advance directives – all important in the life of the senior citizen.

Visit the site at http://www.usa.gov/Topics/Seniors.shtml.

KatyKane Good to be reminded we can use the web to deal with the government agencies. It certainly is much easier than tryig to deal with them in person. A lot of good information here. Thanks.
