5 NON-SURGICAL WAYS TO REJUVENATE YOUR APPEARANCE
TICA LEMA, FOR AFTER FIFTY LIVING
After Fifty Living® celebrates the wisdom and experience we gain with age. It seems like every day however, we see advertisements about breakthroughs that promise to make us look and feel younger. Creams and lotions make claims to erase the hands of time, so how do we separate the hype from reality? Our AFL® team researched the latest in the most popular non-surgical procedures to help rejuvenate your look for a fresh start in 2011.
According to the American Society for Plastic Surgeons the most popular non-surgical procedures for patients ages 40-55+ in 2008 included: Botox injections (2,803,544), Hyaluronic acid injections (556,875), Chemical Peels (463,570), Microdermabrasion (376,268) and Laser hair removal (307,511).
After Fifty Living® consulted noted Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon Dr. Brian S. Coan who serves as Clinical Adjunct Faculty at the Duke University School of Medicine in the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and is the founding surgeon of CARE Plastic Surgery in Durham, NC. Dr. Coan stated that in his practice, both men and women are likely to seek cosmetic procedures to reverse the effects of aging. The most common concerns of mature patients include correcting loose skin, improving the look of jowls, reducing extra eyelid skin, and treatments to address wrinkles. He stated these inevitable effects of time can cause patients to look unhappy, tired, or serious and older than they actually feel.
“Many of my patients come in saying that just because they look older doesn’t mean they feel older. They spend time with their grandchildren and are more active than ever. Generally, they seek science-based procedures to help make their outer appearance in line with how youthful they feel inside.” Dr. Coan also says that non-surgical procedures are a good alternative for budget-conscious patients who prefer less recovery in exchange for more subtle improvements. He also stresses that non-surgical procedures do not last forever and it is critical to seek treatment from an experienced healthcare professional.
So how much will these popular treatments set you back? Pricing varies across the board but here are the national averages for the most five commonly performed non-surgical procedures:
| Botox (Botulium Toxin A injections) | Juvederm (Hyaluronic acid fillers) | Chemical Peels Phenol, (TCA) trichloroacetic acid and (AHAs) alphahydroxy acids | Microdermabrasion | Laser Hair Removal |
| $12-17 per unit (generally 20-50 units per treatment) | $525-650 syringe (generally 1-3 syringes) | $175-500 | $125-200 | $200-750 per area |
| Injection that temporarily reduces frown lines, forehead creases, crows feet near the eyes and thick bands in the neck. The toxin blocks nerve impulses, temporarily paralyzing muscles that cause aging wrinkles. The treatment also works by giving the skin a smoother, more refreshed appearance. | Hyaluronic acid fillers work by plumping the skin to create a more youthful appearance. Areas most commonly treated include thin lips, shallow contours, facial creases and wrinkles, nasolabial folds. Fillers also work to improve the appearance of recessed scars. | Medical grade chemical peels improve and smooth the texture of the facial skin by removing its damaged outer layers. It is helpful for those individuals with facial blemishes, wrinkles and uneven skin pigmentation. | A skin-freshening treatment that helps repair facial skin and the effects of aging. The healthcare professional uses a device like a fine sandblaster to spray tiny crystals across the face, mixing gentle abrasion with suction to remove the dead, outer layer of skin | A medical procedure that uses an intense, pulsating beam of light to remove unwanted hair. The process works by passing a light beam through the skin and targets dark pigment in hair. When the light beam hits the hair follicle (where hair growth originates), the intense heat destroys the hair follicle. |
| 3-4 months | 8-12 months | Medical grade peels usually require 1-3 treatments and generally last 6-24 months. | Usually done in a series of 4-5 treatments over 1-2 months. Lasts 6-14 months. | Generally performed in a 4-5 successive treatments with touch-up 1-2 times per year. |
