LOSING MY HAIR!
QUESTION:
What could be causing my hair loss and how can I regrow my hair? I have osteoarthritis and diabetes and take biotin use rogaine, and have stopped taking glucosamine because I heard it causes your hair to fall out. My thyroid is normal and my doctor does not seem concerned. I have not been diagnosed, but I think I may have fibromyalgia.
Losing my hair!
ASK HEALTH & FITNESS’S DR. JULIO MORA ANSWERS:
Dear “Losing Hair:”
Let me start with your last issue (fibromyalgia) first. You need to see a rheumatologist for this problem. Fibromyalgia is diagnosed by "ruling out" other diseases, so your rheumatologist may need to order some tests in order to hone in on whether or not you do have fibromyalgia.
I can understand your frustration regarding your hair loss. I suggest you see a dermatologist who would be best qualified to examine the many possible causes for hair loss. Please note that your primary care physician may be stymied because most of the research in this area is done by private pharmaceutical companies and the results are rarely shared with the medical community at large. So, at least if you visit a dermatologist, certain diseases can be ruled out. You may want to continue using the biotin and the Rogaine - both of which have been shown to be helpful, in general, in alleviating hair loss.
Thanks for writing – and good luck!
