Need A Pap Smear?
Ask Health & Fitness’ Dr. Julio Mora Answers:
Dear "Need A Pap Smear:"
All 3 organizations (the American Cancer Society, the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force) recommend that women who have undergone a total hysterectomy (including removal of the cervix) for benign disease, discontinue screening for cervical cancer. The ACS (American Cancer Society) recommends screening until three annual tests are negative for women who have had CIN2 or 3 (CIN=cervical intraepithelial neoplasia), unless three negative tests were documented prior to their hysterectomy, and it also recommends ongoing screening for DES-exposed women. (DES=diethylstilbestrol).
I hope this helps - and thanks for writing,
Julio C. Mora, MD
