DRAINED - BUT I CARE

QUESTION:

I take care of my 69yr old mom.  The last 5 years she was thrown out by her daughter, my sister, she tried to kill herself. Taking care of her has left me and her barely hanging on with cash. Me mostly. I lost everything defending the cruelty from my sister and I don't have a job, or a license and I am looking, I will get something, but this madness and cruelty is way out of control. I'm afraid to leave her alone, she has fallen six times and I saved her life 2 times. Thank u...
Drained But I Care

Drained - But I CareAsk Health & Fitness' Jane Venckauskas Answers:

Dear Drained, But I Care:

You need all the outside support you can get to help care for your mother. No one can or should care for an ill elder alone, it takes a team. It is not clear to me what diagnosis your mother has, but her safety is of utmost importance.  You and your mother would benefit from contacting your local Elder Service Agency. They can provide assistance with care-giving and direct you in regards to financial help if your mother qualifies.

I am here if you need any specific care issues addressed. I would like to know what your mother's medical diagnosis is so I can better direct you to help.

God Bless You,
Jane Venckauskas, RN

You do not need to do this alone; there are different services available in every city to help out the elderly and you. If finances are an issue, you may qualify for meals on wheels, reduced cost medication, and housing even in some cases nursing home care. It is important that you start making calls and checking on line, in your area. Don’t give up, there are resources out there depending on your mom's needs, but you will need to advocate for her to get them.

redfred0858 I work as a caregiver to the frail elderly. You clearly need help. Your mom needs to be safe and have her health properly managed, and you sound as though you need some rest. Your own health, mental and physical, is vitally important if you are in charge of your mother. Finances can be very strained in these situations. The previous comments are right, run, don't walk, to whatever directory that is available and start making calls to get the help you need!
