QUESTION:
My father is 89. He's bed-ridden and has Alzheimer's disease. I lend a hand to take care of him for 2 days every week. When we start to bathe him, he yells and screams and curses, using very foul language. What can we do to get him to stop the yelling.
ASK HEALTH & FITNESS RESPONDS:
You may not be able to stop his yelling. That said, be sure he is not in pain. Approach him in a calm manner, and use a few reassuring words - for example, “We are going to wash your face now.” Give him time to process the information. Be sure the water is warm and soothing. And finally, remain calm, even if he is yelling. - Jane Venckauskas, RN
