Dear “OH CAROL:”
What’s the proper way to introduce your "significant other" when you’re in your 50s and you’re dating? We are both divorced and have been dating for the last 2 1/2 years.
I refer to him as my "boyfriend"; he refers to me as his "lady friend." “Lady friend" sounds as if we are a couple in our 70s or 80s; he feels we are too old to be referred to as "boyfriend" or "girlfriend," and I agree that it isn't ideal - but it seems better than the alternative. Any suggestions?
What’s In a Name?
LOVE ‘N LIFE’S “OH CAROL” ANSWERS:
Dear ‘What’s In a Name:’
This is a good question! Why not use the term you opened with, "Significant other?"
Or how about the ol' "better half?" I'm sure neither of you will be singing Lynyrd Skynyrd's "What's your name, little girl, what's your name" so what about just "This is Phil" or "This is Phyllis"? Why does a title need to precede it? I'm sure people can figure out that you two are a couple.
Be grateful you've found someone and don't worry about silly little details.. Life is way too short!
Yours 4 Love,
Carol
